Discovering RDF's impactful initiatives transforming communities across Sindh.

Energy Efficient Housing

According to the estimated record, the huge portion of the population of Sindh living in impoverishment, unable to have 2-times proper meal, building own home seems merely dream to them. Back in the 2010 floods, Government of Sindh announced and started Peoples Housing Cell Program to construct homes for poverty-stricken families. By keeping the vision of technology and effectiveness of houses, Peoples Housing Cell signed a contract with UNDP-GEF, SGP and Government of Sindh to build 260 houses in Badin, Thatta and Karachi. This Technology provides unique housing solution combining in itself a blend of disaster risk reduction, energy efficiency and low cost features that especially suit to physical conditions of disaster prone areas of Pakistan. RDF contributed by constructing energy efficient houses to 260 under privileged families, mostly in coastal areas of Sindh.

Fuel Efficient Stoves

Fuel Efficient Stoves

The design principles behind the energy efficient stoves promoted by RDF are centered on maximizing fuel efficiency and minimizing harmful emissions. These stoves are engineered for superior heat retention and optimized combustion, leading to markedly faster cooking times and a substantial reduction in the need for biomass fuels like wood. This not only alleviates the daily burden on families to gather fuel but also significantly curtails the release of smoke and pollutants indoors, thereby improving household health and reducing the incidence of respiratory ailments. Their robust and user-friendly construction also ensures their durability and practicality for daily use within local contexts.

Bio-Sand Filter

RDF has actively implemented Bio-Sand Filters (BSFs) as a proven and effective solution to address the critical challenge of unsafe drinking water in underserved communities across its operational areas. This initiative leverages the simple, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly nature of BSFs, which utilize layers of sand and gravel for natural filtration, removing pathogens and suspended solids without requiring electricity or chemicals. This approach aligns with RDF’s commitment to sustainable development, significantly contributing to improved public health by reducing waterborne diseases and easing the burden of water collection, particularly for women and girls.

Solar Home Stills - Lighting Up Lives

Solar Home Stills - Lighting Up Lives

Lighting Up Lives with Solar Energy is a flagship initiative of the RDF, implemented in collaboration with Kindernothilfe (KNH) and co-financed by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. The project has brought transformative change to some of the most climate-vulnerable and off-grid communities in Sindh, Pakistan, especially across Tharparkar and Sanghar, by installing solar-powered systems in 750 homes, 10 health units, 10 schools, 10 dug wells, and 25 women-led production units. These systems have not only illuminated homes and critical services but have also directly improved education, healthcare, livelihoods, and water access in some of the harshest desert environments of Pakistan.
